The Juilliard School:
Stage Management Apprentice

I was fortunate to spend the 2021-2022 school year as one of the stage management apprentices as part of Juilliard’s Professional Apprentice Program. This was an extremely busy and challenging year, but also a great one, where I had the chance to hone not only my “hard” skills, but also building the skills that I would argue are a lot more important – things like advocacy, promoting equity, and setting boundaries. Some highlights included:

  • Working with the fourth-year actors, Group 51, for almost the whole year, allowing me to watch them grow in their final year of training

  • Working on dance for the first time (which I wasn’t expecting to love as much as I did) and getting to call the senior dancers’ final pieces at Juilliard – a truly special night

  • Meeting even more wonderful people!

It’s been a little over a month since the apprenticeship ended (at the time of writing this); sitting in the audience during the graduation ceremony, I just felt so proud of all the students I had gotten to know over the year! Even though there were some difficult times, I am very grateful for my time at Juilliard, and I hope to return soon!
