Coventry Carol

For the holiday season, I wanted to make a cover of ‘Coventry Carol’, a traditional English carol. I’ve always been drawn to its haunting beauty, and it’s so interesting to think about this dark carol in a time that is generally considered to be quite joyful. No matter what, if any, religion or belief you follow, I think it is important to look at the traditions wholistically through intentional study - not simply blind faith. This carol sings about the violence of Herod that often gets brushed over in the Christmas story. For me, this carol is a reminder that darkness is tied to the light - and that’s okay. Especially in the holidays, it’s okay to feel the darkness while on the lifelong journey to the light. This is almost entirely a Pentatonix cover; their cover is also the first that I’ve heard, and is so, so wonderful. I say “mostly” because I had a lot of fun integrating percussion and strings into this cover, as well as figuring out what to adjust so I could blend my one voice when compared to their five (the answer is melodyne lol).

I referenced lyricaldance14’s transcription of Pentatonix’s arrangement quite a lot! https://musescore.com/user/28005540/scores/5592844

For the split screen effects, I primarily used this macro from MotionArray by user LLmotion: https://motionarray.com/davinci-resolve-macros/split-screen-fx-grid-layouts-939218/

Fun fact, the little sound of the candle being blown out at the end is a sound effect, not me! I also found it on MotionArray by user StudioZonet: https://motionarray.com/sound-effects/blow-out-candle-1170774/?listing_position=0&q=candle&date_added=last-year&sort_by=most-popular
